Description
Alone and lost—on the North Slope of Alaska.
Slowly she is accepted by a pack of Arctic wolves, and she comes to love them as though they were her brothers. With their help, and drawing on her father’s training, she struggles day by day to survive. In the process, she is forced to rethink her past, and to define for herself the traditional riches of Eskimo life: intelligence, fearlessness, and love.
The author’s deep knowledge of the habits of wolves and life in the arctic, makes this a fascinating and informative story.
Diane Pendergraft writes a good review about the controversy surrounding this story. The story, Julie of the Wolves, subtly introduces readers to animistic beliefs which is common globally in indigenous cultures, whose survival depended on the natural world around them. The story provides good talking points for parents and readers. For a Christian perspective, see World Religions – Animism.
