Lesson 12: History Through Art

This lesson looks at the history of the Beothuk tribe in St. John’s, Newfoundland, which was originally thought to be wiped out by the Europeans. However, recent evidence has revealed that these people assimilated and integrated into the greater European population.

Art Featured: A miniature portrait titled “A female Red Indian of Newfoundland” which some sources date to 1841. It is believed to be a portrait of Shanawdithit, a Beothuk woman. Artist: not determined. (PD)
