Description
Madeleine de Verchere’s story is based on a true account of colonial French Canada of the 1690’s. Harassed by Iroquoians, the Verchere family’s fort (seigneury) must keep a continual guard. 14-year-old Madeleine is left alone with two younger brothers and few others when the aboriginals attack. We follow the brave and determined stratagems of Madeleine and her small circle. Madeleine’s youthful but determined leadership will win the reader’s admiration.
This is one of my favourite historical novels with a clear glimpse into life on the seigneury and the role of nobility in New France. I could not put it down. – Donna Ward

Carolyn Lowther –
Adventurous and great story telling! We deeply enjoyed this book as a read aloud in our homeschool. It really cemented the concepts being learned about this time in history.
